Conrad Bangkok: Spoilt for Choice
Whether you are in Bangkok for work or play, the Conrad Bangkok is the ideal place to keep all your troubles away. Words by Mark Bibby Jackson.
With so many international standard, luxury five-star hotels in Bangkok, you are quite literally spoilt for choice. But isn’t that the whole point of visiting the city of angels – of spoiling yourself.
The Conrad Bangkok is an excellent case in point. True to its global promise of delivering The Luxury of Being Yourself, and despite its central location, the five-star hotel is much more than a convenient place to stay while doing business in the Thai capital.
Our suite was a wonderful blend of the functional and luxurious. A perfect example of contemporary Thai design, incorporating rich Jim Thompson silks and natural woods, it comes as no surprise that the hotel was voted as one of the Top 15 hotels in Thailand by Conde Nast Traveler readers in 2012. While the 50 Mbps high-speed broadband internet access and data ports made it easy for me to stay in touch with the outside world, the 32” LCD TV and iPod dock allowed me the option of escaping it. I opted for the latter.
One signature feature of the hotel is its association with Tara Smith. The free-standing bath tub and separate rain shower, afford guest every opportunity to enjoy the wide range of aromatherapy products. Ideal for those who have taken advantage of the BodyWorx Fitness Centre or the 24-hour gym, tennis courts and jogging track within the seventh floor gardens, it works equally as well for those who have found Bangkok’s neverending shopping malls sufficient to work up a sweat.
It is at its room at the top that the Conrad Bangkok allows guests to spoil themselves something rotten. Situated on the 29th Floor, the Executive Lounge is the epitome of temptation. Having popped up for the complimentary English afternoon tea, replete with the finest Earl Grey, scones, cherry jam and cream, we found ourselves repeat offending for the 6pm to 8pm happy hour. The wide array of canapés, signature cocktails and free-flowing wine allows those guests fortunate enough to have access to these dizzy hights to dine on the sky-high view of Bangkok’s sprawling sky line. What can be better than watching the pandemonium of the Bangkok rush hour unfurl below you while enjoying a sky-high martini, shaken not stirred naturally?
If you – unlike ourselves – manage to avoid the temptation of feasting on such largesse, then the less elevated dining options range from an international buffet at Café@2, to Liu’s Chinese cuisine with a contemporary twist and authentically Japanese KiSara. Whichever option you elect, be sure to round off your evening, or – for those lacking an early morning meeting the following day – prep yourself for a night on town with a cocktail at the Diplomat Bar. Washed down with the sultry jazz of the house live band this really is the perfect way to slip into the Bangkok night.
